Expectations for exiting our Montessori Preschool Classrooms

Language Arts Standards

Standard 1- Reading
Read critically (analyze, synthesize, and evaluate) literary and technical material for a variety of purposes (learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and exchange of information).

Student will listen to a story and retell events; act out poems and stories that are read orally; and add appropriate sound effects and or words while listening to an oral story.

Student will show understanding that print carries meaning; see differences in pictures and shapes;recognize signs and labels in their environment; Student will recognize some upper and lower case letters; identify at least 13 sounds of the alphabet; and will know how to use a book (front to back, top to bottom, etc).

Standard 2- Literature
Read and comprehend a wide range of classic and contemporary literature, both fiction and non-fiction, from a variety of cultures and historical periods.

Student will identify and describe the characters in literature; describe the setting; identify the sequence of events; and use books in daily learning.

Standard 3- Writing
Produce a variety of forms of writing that is responsive to audience and purpose and exhibits expertise with such features as Ideas/Content, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions.

Student will draw a picture to express thoughts and ideas; create story by looking at a picture; demonstrate that written words have meaning; use letters/letter-like symbols to represent ideas; and will demonstrate ability to copy words.

Standard 4- Language
Acquire language and demonstrate an understanding of how language develops, works, and changes within and across communities and contexts.

Student will use oral language to relate experiences, express thoughts, or retell and event; express thoughts in complete sentences; and carry out one-step and two-step directives. Student will recognize and understand common objects (ball, dog, cat, etc) and actions (running, hopping, jumping); ask and answer simple questions; participate in rhymes, rhythms, and nonsense syllables.

Mathematics Standards

Standard 1 - Number Sense and Computation
The student uses numerical and computational concepts and procedures in a variety of situations.

Student will understand more and less; compare and order whole numbers to 10; use one to one correspondence to 10 items; count orally to 30; attempt to write numbers up to 10; match numeral to object 1-10.

Standard 2- Algebraic Concepts
The student uses algebraic concepts and procedures in a variety of situations.

Student will recognizes and develop patterns; recognize the basic colors; sort or classify object of similar attributes; identify objects that do not belong to a particular group; and will recognize graphs and interpret data.

Standard 3- Geometric Concepts
The student uses geometric concepts and procedures in a variety of situations.

Student will recognize a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle within their environment; recognize geometric shapes; attempt to draw geometric shapes; participate in measurement activities; identify quantitative concepts (big/little, long/short); show an understanding of spatial relationships (behind, beside, over, etc); show an understanding of time: days, months, year; and will recognize that clocks have meaning.
